Personal computers, like cars, needs to be well maintained so it can perform well. Caring for your computer on a regular basis will ensure that your computer will last longer and will be ready when you need to use it. Knowing to maintain your computer is a useful skill because it can save you money on repairs and your coworkers might ask help from you to help maintain their computers for a fee.
1. You need to familiarize yourself with your computer. Computer usually comes with a computer manual when you buy one. You may have to read the manuals or you can surf the internet for more information in case you experience some problem or difficulty with your computers. There are also help information on the operating system itself which could help you in your problem.
2. You need to know if there are others who can help you. You might have friends that are technically savvy and are willing to help but you must also not rely on them because they might be busy at times. You may consult some support groups or join online forums because some of these people might also be experiencing the same problem as you have and may already have found the solution.
3. You need to protect the heath and security of your computer. You can do these by installing software for virus protection, firewall and other programs that will help protecting your computer. A good advice is to make a back up copy of your files on a regular basis so you can easily reinstall your files should your computer get infected with a virus or should your hard disk fails. There are software that can help you in creating back-up files but the easiest way is to copy your files to a CD or DVD.
4. Learn to see any problems with your computer. When the computer hangs up, it should tell us that there is a problem with the computer that we need to look into. Oftentimes, rebooting the computer will temporarily fix the problem but there are problems that cannot be corrected by rebooting alone. You might also need to maintain your disk space because usual problems in computer comes from disk that are already full.
5. Learn to use the system software like System Defragmenter and ScanDisk to help maintain your hardware. These will help maintain your disk for optimum use.
6. Clean up your files frequently. Delete those files which you do not need anymore including those temporary files and those files that are already in the recycle bin. You can also clean up your emails by removing mails which you do not need anymore. Cleaning up your email, especially for bulk mails, will actually prevent your computer from getting infected with a virus.
7. Organize your files on a weekly basis. Move your files into their respective folders so you can easily find the files when you need it again. Your computer desktop should have minimal files on it just like your real desktop so it will look neat and organized.
